Are the QR codes free for commercial use?

Yes — codes you generate are yours, with no watermark, expiry or tracking. They're static codes that encode your data directly.

Which error-correction level should I use?

M (15%) suits most uses. Use H (30%) when adding a logo or printing small, since more of the code can be damaged or covered and still scan.

What is a UPI QR code?

It encodes a upi://pay link with your UPI ID, name and optional amount, so any Indian payments app (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM) can pay you on scan.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The QR is generated and verified entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent to any server.

What a QR code holds

A QR code is a two-dimensional grid of black and white squares called modules. The pattern encodes text — often a URL, but it can be any short string. The three large squares in the corners are finder patterns that let a scanner locate and orient the code from any angle.

Error correction

QR codes include built-in error correction, so they can still be read even if part of the code is dirty, damaged, or covered by a logo. Higher error-correction levels tolerate more damage but need a denser grid to store the same data.

Scanning considerations

Contrast is what makes a code scannable: dark modules on a light background read reliably, while low-contrast colour combinations often fail. Leaving a clear "quiet zone" (empty margin) around the code, and keeping it large enough for the scanning distance, both improve the read rate.

Practical uses

Because a phone camera can decode them instantly, QR codes are handy for sharing a link, a Wi-Fi network, or contact details in the physical world, where typing a long URL would be error-prone.

QR began on factory floors

DENSO WAVE developed the QR Code in Japan in 1994 after conventional barcodes became limiting for manufacturing needs. Its two-dimensional structure could carry more information and be read quickly.

Opening the specification helped adoption

QR Code specifications were made publicly available, and QR Code became an ISO international standard in 2000. That standardization helped it spread far beyond automotive manufacturing.

A readable code is not a safe destination. A QR code can encode a link correctly and still point to an unsafe or misleading destination. Successful scanning only confirms that the code is readable; it does not verify that the destination is trustworthy. Before printing a code, scan the downloaded version from a phone at the intended distance and confirm the link is correct.
